The origin of Yaeyama Minsā is unknown. Kasuri splashed patterned fabric is made from cotton thread dyed with indigo, Ryūkyū indigo, and dyes from the fukugi (garcinia subelliptica) or kūru (yam family) plants. A type of ribbed weaving, Yaeyama Minsā is used to produce obi (sash worn with a kimono), neckties, and bags which have an air of tropical brightness. Kasuri patterns are arranged in an alternating four-five pattern and carries the meaning, "for all eternity."
